Reading

I haven't spent too much time working on this blog because we aren't "offically" homeschooling yet. Though we certainly are always in the middle of many projects here. Right now both boys are really making the leap into reading. Thanks to the time they have spent on Starfall they both have a good grasp of basic phonics and can read most simple words. We are also working our way through Teach Your Child in 100 Easy Lessons.

Preschool

Both Henry and Theo go to preschool. In fact Henry is in his 3rd year because he just missed the kindergarten cutoff. I obviously won't be sending him to kindergarten in the fall but I sure wish I could continue sending him to preschool, or least something similar for older kids. For 12 hours a week Henry gets together with friends to play, do cool projects, sing songs and more. Theo goes to school for 6 of those 12 hours. And though they don't need to go to preschool to do these things it does me give me a break.

I know that they do a lot of the same stuff in kindergarten. But what I don't like about kindergarten is that the children do spend a lot of time sitting in desks. Plus it's every day and in some school districts it's all day. This doesn't allow time for a child do much else.

Once we move to Texas I may continue to send Theo to preschool for another year. I will also probably send Iris for a year or two. But kindergarten is not the right choice for our family.

The first time I heard about homeschooling

The first time I heard about homeschooling was in 1992 when I was interning in the Kansas State Legislature. A group of homeschoolers were there to testify on their own behalf in regards to some bill. I have no memory of what the bill was. However I do remember thinking that they were a bunch of nutty folk and I was pretty dismissive of them. Ha!
