We're still homeschooling!

Iris officially dropped out of Pre-K this week, so now I have all 3 kids at all. It's great! I hope to have time soon to post an update about what we have been doing.

Mexico and Mexican Culture

instituto.jpg

When I learned we were moving to San Antonio last year I was really excited to have my children learn about Mexican culture first hand. Well, since we discovered that our stay here has been significantly shortened I am trying to accelerate the experience.

Last Friday we went to the Institute of Mexican Culture to look at the paintings. There were 3 galleries in the main building. The boys really enjoyed the paintings by Luis Filcer. Though that probably had to do with the fact that the title of the show was "La Revolucion" and there were many paintings of soldiers.

From there we went to Market Square, which is billed as the most authentic Mexican market outside of Mexico. We browsed in the shops and Henry charmed a shopkeeper by practicing his Spanish with her. We picked up a Lotteria game which they have played in their Spanish class and a Mexican calendar.

You can't go to Market Square without stopping at the Mi Tierra Bakery for treats. The restaurant still has its Day of the Dead displays out. So we spent quite a long time looking at them while we snacked.

Since it was a weekday there was not much going on there. We will have to go back on a Sunday for the music and to see some dancing.

Turtles

This month our Audubon Club is learning about turtles. Last week when we met we read turtle books and made turtle shells out of paper plates.

Audubon Club

The first meeting of our Homeschool Audubon Club was on Monday. We met at the Friedrich Wilderness Park for a get-to-know-eachother hike. There were 5 other families with kids ranging in ages 2 (Iris) to 10. After the hike we had a snack and made bird feeders. We are going to meet twice a month and pour over the contents of the various Audubon Discovery Trunks. We will also go on one field trip a month. Next month we are going to go birding at Mitchell Lake.

Space Shuttle Fever

Ever we since we watched the Discovery blast off last week, the boys have spent a lot of time pondering space shuttles, space staions and satellites. It's been a lot of fun to watch them incorporate it into their play. They made shuttles complete with rockets and boosters and a space station with their notch 'ems.

We definitely are going to have to take a weekend trip to visit Space Center Houston. If we can wait there is a home school overnight event there in February.

We found a couple of pretty good books at the library: The Day We Walked on the Moon and The Picture World of Rockets and Satellites.

And here are some of the more fun interactive websites where we have been hanging out:
Amazing Space
SPACE.com
and of course, NASA's website.

Here are a couple of pictures of the shuttle that the boys have drawn:
